Bryce Canyon, Utah

Bryce Canyon, Utah - October 23-26, 2011

Come join us as we are headed back to Bryce Canyon in southern Utah!  Bryce Canyon, a visual explosion of red, orange, and white geologic features, is a special place to me.  A national park, Bryce Canyon is a giant natural amphitheater carved along the Paunsaugunt plateau by wind, water, and ice erosion.  The vast expanse of  vibrantly-colored hoodoos provides spectacular views for visitors and landscape photographers.

Settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1850s, Ebenezer Bryce homesteaded in the area in 1874.  The amphitheater, about 100 yards from the Bryce Canyon Lodge, is easily accessible and beckons visitors from around the world to revel in its stunningly-beautiful majestic view.

Accommodations have been arranged at a discounted rate at a spacious and well-appointed hotel near the park.  The discounted rate applies from Friday before the class begins to the following Sunday of the weekend after the classed ends if you prefer to extend your stay in the area.   Lodging may also be available at Bryce Canyon Lodge, but like most national park lodges, availability is often scarce.

You may choose to extend your trip by travelling to Zion National Park, where the landscape is completely different from Bryce – and just as beautiful.   The entire area of southern Utah is a fabulous spot for a vacation, from Moab to Bryce Canyon to Zion, with each offering a surprisingly different view of nature in all her glory.  Because Bryce Canyon is most easily accessed from Las Vegas, you may decide head indoors, relax and enjoy the casinos for a day or two as well.  Thus, you have many options to enjoy and experience while you are here for a photography workshop.

When:  October 23-26, 2011

  2. Callvina, the first time I went to Bryce and looked over the edge it was truly breathtaking! I had never seen rock formations look like that anywhere....the hoodoos are something!

  3. Can you provide an idea of what a typical day will be like at this workshop?

Is there a significant amount of hiking involved?

What is required besides my photography equipment?

  4. Richard, the workshop will start Sunday afternoon, so people can arrive and checkin as early as Friday afternoon (and enjoy the same discount price) or as late as Sunday morning. The Sunday afternoon session will give us time to register and discuss the first shooting plans for Monday morning. We will do sunrise and sunset shoots on Mon, Tues, and Wed. All the shooting will be at Bryce Canyon. During the daytime we will work in the conference room on Photoshop learning the software and working on the images we have shot. Then Wed evening we will have a finale presentation of images taken by the attendees.

There will not be a significant amount of hiking involved as we will drive to the locations we intend to shoot both in the morning and evenings and perhaps a short hike to get to the observation point from where we park.

I encourage everyone to bring what photography equipment they have, but to not go out and buy a bunch of new equipment. Everyone will need to bring a laptop to work on with photoshop (CS5 - will be taught), but a demo version can be downloaded prior to attending the workshop if you don't already have it.

It will be in October, so bring warm clothes as it will be quite cool in the early mornings and late evenings, hiking boots or sneakers, and whatever clothing is comfortable for you for fall conditions at higher elevations. I would anticipate the weather could swing from the 30s to 60s during the time we will be there. You might want to bring some rain gear in case we get sprinkled on while trying to shoot.

the class will end Wed evening and you can check out Thursday morning. Then you can choose to stay and enjoy the same discount price for the rooms for the remainder of the week/weekend or run down to Zion on your own or spend the rest of the week in Las Vegas....
